Back during the deer season, I saw literally hundreds of turkeys on my property. Although turkey season is now a week old in my area, I'm barely hearing any gobbling at all.

I've got a couple of theories as to why this is, and was wanting to discuss them here. First and most obvious, it's been pretty cold in the mornings so far, and I think we might be a little early for the birds to be getting active. This theory will prove itself to be true or false in the coming days since it's starting to warm up nicely now.

A more obscure thought is that the coyotes might be part of the problem. It seems to me that the birds are gobbling while still on the roost, but they are shutting up as soon as they hit the ground. I wonder if the coyotes have made the birds scared....

I hunted yesterday for a few hours, and the birds were gobbling a little bit more often than they have been. Not only that, but I also heard some hens yelping occasionally; something I haven't heard at all this year. I think they are about ready to get fired up!

SOUNDS LIKE THE GOBLERS MAY BE HENED UP. TRY BACKING OFF AND HITTING THEM AGAIN AROUND NOON OR EARLY AFTERNOON. BY THIS TIME IN THE DAY THE HENS SHOULD BE ON THE NEST, AND THE GOBLERS SHOULD BE GETTING PRETTY LONELY.

Hey Hambone, welcome to the Wingshooters forums. You know, I think you might have something there. When I was hunting on Saturday, I heard a few hens yelping, and I think the gobblers are getting caught up with the hens.

When a gobbler is with a hen, you can pretty much forget calling him away from her, and I think this is what's happening. When I get back in the woods on Thursday, I'll try some serious calling around noon or so.

Well, I tried it again yesterday, and still no luck. They gobbled a little bit over on some posted land, but again shut up early. I hunted until about lunch time and heard nothing else.

Boy, they were really gobbling this morning! They gobbled all the way up until 11:00am. Problem is, they were either across the creek (not my property) or over on the lease that our club just lost. Couldn't call them over to where I was.

Looks like I've got one more chance, then this season is over for me.

I'll try to get the hunting journal updates out there this afternoon.

Hey Sportsman,
Sorry to hear of the tuff luck. I think I would have tried calling to them anyway.Sometimes if there is more than one gobbler together, you can call one of the gobblers away from the bunch with some soft purrs and lonesome/lost calling.
Good luck on the 29th.
